Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – A survivor’s post!

On Tuesday, August 11th the American Cancer Society will kick off their 2020 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign.

Here I am in June 2019 with my 2019 Portrait of Hope Sisters getting ready to kickoff the 2019 campaign.

We are doing our photo shoot so we can kick off the 2019 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Seems like such a long time ago. My hair was just starting to get to a comfortable length for me. It was much darker than what I was used to but I was scared to color it yet. They say new hair growth hair after chemo is very fragile.

I was still scared about the whole “cancer” thing but trying to stand up and show other women that you CAN make it!

The American Cancer Society helped me so much. They gave me resources to research and connect with other cancer patients. Becoming a Portrait of Hope gave me the ability to speak out about Breast Cancer.

WE CAN BEAT IT! We need research. In order to do research we need funding. Please consider joining your local Making Strides campaign and showing your support!

To any newly diagnosed women who will be going through chemo treatments, below are some of the wonderful resources I found to help me through this:

American Cancer Society – www.cancer.org Research most any question you have from types of medicine to finding rides to treatments to support groups. They have it all!

“tlc” Tender Loving Care – www.tlcdirect.org For all your scarves, wigs, bras and so many other things. They are a non-profit organization and absolutely wonderful! And a few personal thoughts: Make sure you are comfortable with your doctors. Your medical oncologist, your surgeon, your radiation oncologist. You are putting your life in their hands. Be sure to trust them. If you don’t, find another one.

Know that you will see a lot of the “worst case” stories on the internet. Those aren’t necessarily going to be your experience. Most of all, BE KIND TO YOURSELF!
